May is Building Safety Month! This year’s theme is “Mission Possible” and emphasizes the basics of building safety and how to incorporate this knowledge into your home and broader community.
One of the first steps you can take is to test your home’s carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Monthly testing is recommended to guarantee your detectors are always functioning in case of emergency. Note that if you don’t have carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, the building code requires their installation when you are issued a building permit!
Building permits ensure that safe construction practices are followed by verifying compliance with the California Building Code. Did you know that water heater replacements, furnace or AC change-outs, and re-roofs all require a building permit to ensure safety and compliance with the California Building Code?
If you are planning on renovating your home, be sure to speak with the City of Cotati Building Division beforehand. The Building Division can help you determine what types of work require a permit and how to make a submittal. Many permit types can be issued the same day, or within one to two business days!
