PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COTATI DECLARING THE MONTH OF MAY 2025 BIKE MONTH
WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast since 1956, a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more people of all ages and abilities to giving biking a try; and
WHEREAS, since 2004, May Is Bike Month has been celebrated across the Sonoma County Region and events are planned throughout the month to promote and encourage people to try bicycling for some of their trips; and
WHEREAS, every day is a good day to choose riding a bike, but May is special because people want to get outside, enjoy our wonderful city in warmer weather, and enjoy Cotati’s bike lanes and trails for recreational riding, commuting, and seeing the city we call home; and
WHEREAS, since a recent study found that when an individual replaces one car trip per day with a bike trip, that person reduces their carbon emissions from transportation by 67 percent, just one small change in your daily life which contributes to a healthier future for our planet and nation; and
WHEREAS, since using a bike for transportation can help improve personal health and air quality, Cotati residents should be encouraged to try an active alternative for transportation such as biking instead of a car; and
WHEREAS, celebrating May Is Bike Month is simple: go for a ride -- any ride, whether it’s a short trip for coffee or a miles long ride, for any way you choose to ride a bike is the right way to ride a bike; and
WHEREAS, the month of May is a great time to check with local cycling clubs, the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition or our local bicycle shop to find other people with which to ride; and
WHEREAS, Thursday May 15th 2025 is Bike to Wherever Day and the City of Cotati is partnering with Sonoma Clean Power to host an Energizer Station at the Cotati Train Depot and we encourage everyone to join in a host of cycling activities, challenges, and classes throughout the month of May.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the City Council of the City of Cotati declares the month of May 2025 as Bike Month in Cotati.
